There are currently 180 registered Changing Places facilities in Australia that meet the required technical specifications. Changing Places users and carers can spend in excess of 20 minutes in a Changing Places facility. In addition to meeting the technical standards, there is now an opportunity to consider the visual style and design of a facility.
We want you to nominate the Changing Places facility that you think is best designed in Australia. This could be informed by the tiles, the exterior design, or its consideration of sensitivity issues.
If you would like, you can also explain why you think this facility is the best designed in Australia. This component, however, will not impact the judging outcome. Instead, your answer will be used by us to understand what our community likes to see!
Nominated facilities will then be judged by a panel of Changing Places and Sensory experts, against criteria, to be named The Best Designed Changing Places in Australia, 2021. There will also be $1000 donated to the charity of the facility owner’s choice.
We will also be running a people’s choice vote, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled on our socials!
We’re proud to have this competition sponsored by Equal Access. Bruce Bromley, Equal Access Managing Director, Changing Places Assessor and co-author of the Australian Changing Places Design Specifications, assesses and certifies a lot of Changing Places.
Day to day, he sees many compliant, yet clinical facilities. Bruce is throwing down the challenge to architects, designers and facility owners to make Changing Places as welcoming and visually appealing as possible. This will take into consideration design elements such as the justification for design, colour, exterior design and consideration for the function of the facility.
